About

“Jonathan Matas is a painter from Seattle and currently residing primarily in a small Himalayan town in North India. Matas has been devoted to painting from his earliest days as a child in 90’s grunge-era Seattle. He had eclectic creative influences growing up in a thriving arts community, and most of his high school years were spent doing graffiti. Matas got a degree in Visual Arts from Emily Carr University in Vancouver. Since then, he’s essentially lived as a nomad, living all over America and Asia making murals and paintings wherever he goes. In New York, he participated in many group shows including at Exit Art. While in San Francisco during 2011-15, he made many murals, including several as one of Facebook’s first artists-in-residence. Matas often travels internationally to work as a painter, having made art recently in London, Singapore, Tokyo, and Taiwan. Matas has spent the majority of the past five years in India where he has been painting and studying Buddhist teachings. In 2018, Matas spent several months in Nepal working as a production designer and painter on Khyentse Norbu’s feature film “Looking For a Lady With Fangs and a Moustache.” He also had a solo show at Heron Arts in San Francisco in 2019, showcasing his ongoing interest in painting portraits from life.”
